Adult and Children’s Footcare
As a concerned parent, you undoubtedly invest a lot of time, effort and money on your children’s overall health and the health of certain body parts such their eyes and teeth. In all your frantic worrying about finding the best pediatric ophthalmologists and orthodontists, you may be neglecting aspects of your child’s health that may be just as important.
Arch Pain and Heel Spurs
Usually caused by plantar fascitis, a stress injury reminiscent of carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow. It affects the plantar fascia, a ligament extending from the heel bone to the ball of the foot, in other words, the arch of your foot. This ligament is responsible for supporting the arch of the foot, sustaining weight during walking or running.
Foot & Ankle Injuries
Broken bones, dislocations, sprains, contusions, infections, and other serious conditions of the foot can happen at any time – at home, work, exercising or playing sports. Early detection and treatment is very important and could affect the overall outcome of the injury. At our offices, we have x-ray on premises, which allows us to start the proper course of treatment during your first visit.
Tendonitis
A common problem stemming from overuse of the posterior tibial tendon. This tendon helps to support the arch of the foot, and prevents your feet from rolling. Common signs that a patient may have tendonitis is tingling, burning, and shooting pains in the foot. The patient’s instep may also appear inflamed. Treatment of these conditions of the foot is dependant on the severity of the problem.
Bursitis
the inflammation of one of the sacs (or bursae) that help muscles and tendons slide smoothly over our bones. Overuse or constant pressure on the knee causes the bursa to fill with fluid. It then becomes irritated, gritty and rough, and can create friction in other parts of the joint as it swells.
Diabetic Footcare
Foot ulcers are a common complication of the “diabetic foot”. These ulcers are caused by too much pressure on the skin of the foot which eventually leads to the skin “breaking down” and, in many cases, becoming infected. They can occur under corns and calluses. Proper diabetic foot care includes avoiding pressure to the affected area and quality wound dressings.
Arthritic Footcare
Foot arthritis symptoms can affect other areas of the body, which results in poor posture and restricted movements. It is sometimes difficult for the feet to work correctly as weight-bearing structures that support and propel the body forwards, when some of the important joints such as the hips or shoulders are affected.
Heel Spurs
Heel spurs are abnormal bony growths that develop at the back or under the heel as a result of ongoing soft tissue inflammation or irritation. The inflammation, more so than the heel spur, can cause significant pain.
Bunions
Bunions are one of the most common foot deformities. When displacement of the bone under the big toe occurs, this causes the big toe to move towards the smaller toes. This shifting of the bones causes a bony prominence on the side of the patients foot (the bunion joint). Over a period of time the big toe may come to rest under (sometimes over) the second toe.
Cosmetic Foot Surgery
Patients often complain of bunions, unsightly lumps & bumps; overlong or bent toes and flatfoot deformities. These conditions may be unsightly or painful (or often both) and cause great embarrassment for the sufferer. These can usually be dealt with easily by surgery under general or local anesthetic on a day-case basis.
Hammer Toe Treatment
A hammer toe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. When afflicted with this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, so that it looks like a hammer. Initially, affected toes are flexible and can be corrected with simple hammer toe treatment. Left untreated, however, hammer toes can become fixed and may require surgery.
Heel Pain Treatment
Heel pain can develop due to a number of factors. In most cases, it does not result from a single injury. Instead, heel pain usually occurs as a result of excessive or continuous stress or repetitive pounding on the heel. In addition to pain around the ball of the foot, swelling and bruising may also be present.
Plantar Fasciitis Treatment
Plantar fasciitis involves pain and inflammation of the thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, which runs along the bottom of your foot from your heel bone to your toes. Plantar fasciitis is most painful with your first steps in the morning. Plantar fasciitis is most common in runners, people who are overweight, pregnant women, and people who wear shoes with inadequate support.
Burning Feet (Neuroma)
A neuroma is a painful swelling of a nerve, usually in the ball or heel of the foot. Symptoms include sporadic pain; burning, tingling or numbness of one or more toes; and a popping sensation when walking. Pain is often soothed by taking weight off the foot or by massaging the area. In the foot, there are the long bones (metatarsals) and thin nerves running between them.
Orthotics
Orthotics are shoe inserts that correct the way the foot moves while standing, walking, running or playing a sport. In addition to making these activities more comfortable and efficient, orthotics treat problems with the feet, ankles, knees, hips or back that are due to abnormal movements of one or both feet.
Corns
Corns are similar to calluses in that they are formed by an accumulation of dead skin cells that create thick, hardened areas on the skin of the feet. The corns themselves have a cone shaped core, the point of which can cause pain by pressing down on a nerve. Corns usually form on the tops, sides, and tips of the toes, and are quite common.
Wart Removal
Warts are skin growths caused by viruses. Different warts respond to different treatments. Some go away on their own. Salicylic acid products (in the form of drops, gels, pads and bandages) can help self-treatment of many warts by dissolving the keratin protein that makes up the wart and the dead skin above it.
Calluses
Calluses are caused by accumulation of dead skin cells. These hardened areas of the skin are your body’s way of protecting itself from pressure and friction. Normal areas that may develop calluses are the heel, inside the big toe, and on the ball of the foot. Calluses develop due to excessive pressure on certain areas of the foot.
